How we vet plumbers
Idaho licenses plumbers through the Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL). We confirm the firm’s license, that the people doing the work hold current plumbing licenses, and its insurance. Then we call three homeowner references and visit a finished job. The full Standard →
When to book
Plumbing is year-round, but replace an aging water heater before winter, and have outdoor spigots and lines protected before the first hard freeze.
Across the Valley
Older homes in Boise’s North End and East End and the older parts of Nampa and Caldwell are where galvanized pipe and old sewer lines turn up. Newer subdivisions in Meridian, Kuna and Star mostly need water heaters and fixtures as they age. Rural Canyon County homes add well pumps and pressure tanks.
Red flags.
If you hear any of these from a firm, keep looking.
- Won’t say whether the job needs a permit, or asks you to pull it yourself
- Quotes a water heater swap without asking about venting, the expansion tank or gas line size
- Wants full payment before parts arrive
Common questions.
Does replacing a water heater need a permit?
Tank or tankless?
Should I get a sewer scope before buying a house?
