The details.

How we vet concrete contractors
Registration, insurance, references and a finished project. Taller retaining walls can need an engineered design and a permit, so we look for firms that know when. The full Standard →
When to book
Spring through fall. Concrete has to cure above freezing, so late-fall pours need protection.
Across the Valley
Clay soils and freeze-thaw cycles move flatwork across the Valley, so the base and drainage matter more here than the finish.
Red flags.
If you hear any of these from a firm, keep looking.
- No mention of base preparation or compaction
- No control joints in a slab
- A large deposit just to get on the schedule
Common questions.
Pavers or concrete?
Concrete costs less up front. Pavers flex with freeze and thaw and can be repaired one piece at a time.
Why is my driveway cracking?
Some cracking is normal. Wide or heaving cracks usually point to a poor base or drainage.
Do I need a permit?
Driveway approaches and taller retaining walls often do. Ask your city or county.
