How to check a contractor before you hire one in Idaho
Registration, trade licenses, insurance, references. The same first four checks our Standard runs, and how you can run them yourself.

The first four points of the HomeGuild Standard are things any homeowner can check before hiring. They take an evening, and they rule out most of the trouble.
1. Registration and trade licenses
Idaho requires most contractors to register with the state, and licenses plumbers, electricians, and HVAC installers separately. Both are handled by the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses (DOPL), which runs a public lookup on its website. Search the business name and the name of the person who will actually do the work.
Check three things: the record exists, it is current, and the name matches the business on your quote. A plumbing or electrical job should be done, or supervised, by someone holding that trade's license, not only a general registration.
2. Insurance, from the source
Ask for a certificate of insurance showing general liability, and workers' compensation if the firm has employees. Then call the insurance agent listed on the certificate and confirm the policy is active. A certificate is a snapshot; the agent can tell you whether it is still true.
3. References you call yourself
Ask for three recent customers with jobs like yours, and call them. Useful questions: Did the final price match the quote? Did they show up when they said? What happened when something went wrong? The last one tells you the most.
4. Time in the Valley
A firm that has worked here for years has a reputation to protect and a track record you can check. That doesn't make a new firm bad, but it means the references and the site visit have to carry more weight.
What we add on top
These four get a firm to the door. The rest of the Standard is a reviewer's visit to finished work, a pricing pledge, and doing all of it again every August. That's the part a homeowner can't easily do alone, and it's why firms on the register are introduced to members rather than listed for anyone who pays.
